Sony unveils new line of sleek, powerful and lightweight notebooks with the VAIO Z series
Ultra portability and power
The successful integration of key Japanese technologies has enabled Sony to create a machine well-suited for life on the road. Weighing in at a mere 1.48 kg, the VAIO Z series utilises a new 12-layer high-density mounting board that delivers powerful performance and results in a stylishly compact footprint. Compared to previous models, the dimensions are 10% smaller thanks to the board, making the VAIO Z series ideal for both desktop computing and mobile use. The VAIO Z series also includes a long-lasting battery that is perfect for the mobile warrior.
Executive design
To better fit business environments, the VAIO Z series comes in a matte black finish and boasts a light yet durable carbon fibre body. The centre of the silver hinge, which gives the machine its distinctive cylindrical look, comprises part of the battery and houses the recessed power switch.
The VAIO Z series has a full-size, “isolated” keyboard for fast, precise and whisper-quiet input. The keyboard panel and palm rest are formed from a single aluminium sheet - slightly rounded and bevelled at the front and back for a beautiful flowing effect.
Built to last
The tough carbon fibre body, rigorously tested for durability, protects against physical shock, and the LCD has a hard coating to reduce scratches. Additionally, the one-piece, aluminium construction contributes to the overall robustness of the machine.
Fast, versatile performance
The VAIO Z series comfortably fulfils the varied needs of busy professionals in terms of performance and versatility. Intel® Centrino®2 Processor Technology speeds work and ensures smooth, stress-free operation, while advanced graphics capability is provided by Sony's highly acclaimed Dynamic Hybrid Graphics System. Comprised of two graphics processors - NVIDIA® GeForce® 9300M GS GPU for full graphics acceleration and Mobile Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD for maximum mobile usage - the system lets users manually choose either SPEED (full graphics acceleration) or STAMINA (maximum battery life) mode. The setting is changed via a conveniently located switch above the keyboard and does not require rebooting.
Slimline display
Key to the trim profile of the VAIO Z series is the 13.1-inch Clear Tough LCD [Rich Colour] display, which is ideal for both desktop and mobile computing. The super-slim display has a 16:9 aspect ratio at 1600 x 900 pixels (WXGA++) - perfectly matching High Definition (HD) quality. This makes for a larger desktop than standard size displays, offering users added room for opening documents or multiple Explorer windows. Exhibiting outstanding brightness and rich colour characteristics, the display exceeds the NTSC colour gamut by up to 100% (u' v' axis) and is easily viewed even when outdoors.
Multiple configurations
The VGN-17GN/B ships with 4GB DDR3 SRAM and a 320GB hard disk drive; the VGN-16GN/B comes with 2GB DDR3 SRAM and a 250GB hard disk drive. All models have Microsoft Windows Vista® Business pre-installed.
Productivity and peace of mind
Answering the particular privacy needs of executive power users, VAIO Z is equipped with a convenient fingerprint sensor for speedy logins and Trusted Platform Module (TPM) security chip for enhanced security. Additionally, in order to create a more satisfying user experience, Sony has reduced the decibel level, especially in the frequency ranges that people find unpleasant. Pre-installed software includes VAIO Presentation Support - a business-class productivity tool that adds a new level of flexibility to business presentations.
Versatile connectivity
The VAIO Z series is outfitted with IEEE802.11a/b/g/Draft n wireless for sure connections throughout a broad range of mobile environments. Other interfaces include an HDMI port for connecting to HD LCD TVs, two USB 2.0 ports, slots for Memory Sticks as well as SD memory cards and an external monitor connector.
